The 2017-18 St.Theresa Varsity Boys Basketball Team claimed the PA State CYO Basketball Tournament Championship which was held this year in the Harrisburg Diocese at Trinity High School in Camp Hill. It was the first ever state championship for the St. Theresa boys program in nearly 70 years since the school’s inception in 1948.
The team recently won the 66th Annual Harrisburg Diocese Championship held at St. Patrick School in Carlisle, PA on March 23rd - 25th and qualified for The Final 8 in the State Championship Tournament. The team won their first round game on Friday night against Mary the Mother Redeemer of the Philadelphia Archdiocese and then again on Saturday in the Eastern PA final against St. Thomas More of the Allentown Diocese to advance to the program’s first appearance in the state championship game since 1963. The Saints were victorious in their title game appearance beating Sacred Heart of the Pittsburgh Diocese 53-44 to claim its first state title ever for the boys program. The team finished the regular season & post season with an overall record of 32-4. In addition to the coveted state championship prize, the team won the Harrisburg League with an 18-0 record and finished 3rd in the prestigious Crusader Showcase Classic at the St. Paul’s School in Baltimore, MD. This year’s team also played national competition in Maryland from the Archdiocese of Washington D.C. and the Diocese of Baltimore. With this season’s accomplishments, the St. Theresa Varsity Boys basketball program now has (4) Harrisburg Diocese Championships (2011, 2013, 2017 & 2018) and (1) Pennsylvania CYO State Championship (2018) in the last eight years.
The 2017-18 varsity boys team members included; Jack Staul, Tyler Houser, Charlie Werner, Chance Westry, Evan Scott, Gabe Deppen, Ethan Pfeffer, Jacob Shull, Danny Britten, Daniel Mailey, Malachi Palmer, Cooper Manley, Jordan Negley, Joe Charbonneau and team managers Tucker Grace and Landon Kuntzelman. They were coached by Jason Grace, Head Coach and assistants Scott Rider, Steve Kuntzelman & Chris Schemeck.
The team thanks everyone for their support this year and looks forward to representing the St. Theresa parish & school community with great pride next season as they attempt to defend their Harrisburg Diocese & PA State Championship banners.
